Sweden: Stock volumes of coniferous sawlogs, pulpwood and chips decreased by 10%

Stocks of Sweden's coniferous sawlogs, pulpwood and chips are estimated to have reached 9.1 million cubic metres as of June 30, 2020. This is a decrease of 10% since the same date last year, according to statistics from the Swedish Forest Agency.

The decrease in stocks is mainly due to the fact that stocks of coniferous sawlogs were as much as 30% lower than last summer, when stocks of sawlogs were unusually high. This year's stock of coniferous sawlogs was 2.3 million cubic meters, which is in line with the summers of 2017 and 2018. Stocks of coniferous sawlogs have decreased in all wood balance regions.

Stocks of pulpwood was 5.6 million cubic metres, which is 2% less than last summer, but still high compared to the summers of 2017 and 2018. In region 4, the southern part of the country, stocks of pulpwood fell by 13% compared with the same time last year. Even there, however, stocks were significantly higher than in summer 2018.

By assortment, pulpwood stocks consisted of 4.4 million cubic metres of softwood, 0.5 million cubic metres of spruce and 0.7 million of hardwood. Compared to last summer, the stock of softwood pulpwood has increased by 7%, while stocks of spruce and hardwood have decreased by 33% and 14%, respectively.

The stocks of chips are estimated to have reached 1.2 million cubic metres. That's 6% more than the same time last year and as much as 36% more than the summer of 2018.
