According to the construction price index compiled by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), construction prices registered a marked decline between October 2008 and April 2009 (-2%). This price decline was due to a considerably sharper fall in civil engineering prices (-3.9%) than in building prices (-1.4%). These trends are attributable to a significant fall in building material prices during the last semester (-15.3%), which was mainly due to fuels, metals and metallurgical products, as well as to the general crisis atmosphere. In the medium term, the construction price index will have registered its first decline after having grown continuously since April 2003, as a price increase (+1.8%) was still registered during the previous semester.
Between April 2008 and April 2009, construction registered a slight overall price decline of -0.3% (+0.3% in building and -1.9% in civil engineering).
