Western US sawmills produce 8.8% more lumber in January-May 2018

Sawmills in the Western U.S. produced 6.177 billion board ft. (bbf) of softwood lumber in the first five months of 2018, a gain of 8.8% from 5.677 bbf a year earlier, according to the latest figures from the Western Wood Products Assn. (WWPA) of Portland, Oregon.

Coastal mills accounted for 3.902 bbf of the five-month total, up 9.7% from 3.556 bbf in the previous year, while inland mills produced 2.107 bbf, up 8.9% year-over-year from 1.934 bbf. California redwood production fell to 169 million board ft. (mmbf), down 9.6% from 186 mmbf.

Output in May alone was 1.279 bbf, a year-over-year increase of 4.7% from 1.222 bbf, and up 3.5% from April’s production of 1.236 bbf.

Coastal mills accounted for 804 mmbf of May’s output, up 4.4% from 770 mmbf a year earlier, and up 1.7% from 791 mmbf in April this year. Inland mills accounted for 431 mmbf – a year-over-year increase of 6.8% from 404 mmbf, and up 4.1% from 414 mmbf in the previous month.

California redwood production dropped 9.4% in May to 43 mmbf from 48 mmbf in May 2017, but was up 40.2% from the previous month’s production of 31 mmbf.

Western softwood lumber inventories were up 3.5% in May to 1.209 bbf from 1.168 bbf a year earlier.
