US softwood lumber production up by 8.6% in January

U.S. sawmills increased softwood lumber production in January by 8.6% year-over-year to 2.895 billion board feet (bbf), an increase of 16.0% compared with the 2.496 bbf reported in December 2017, the Western Wood Products Assn. (WWPA) reported on April 12.

Of the January total, Western U.S. sawmills accounted for 1.269 bbf, a 16.7% increase from 1.087 bbf in January 2017, up 20.0% from December’s 1.057 bbf. Southern U.S. sawmills contributed 1.490 bbf - up 2.5% from 1.453 bbf a year earlier and up 12.8% compared with December’s 1.321 bbf.

Apparent U.S. softwood lumber consumption in January was 3.876 bbf, up 1.3% compared with January 2017’s 3.826 bbf, and up 7.4% from the 3.609 bbf reported for December 2017.

U.S. production as a percentage of practical capacity in January was 85%, up from 82% a year ago, though below the 87% average for 2017 as a whole.

U.S. inventories in January rose by 1.1% to 2.944 bbf from 2.911 bbf in January 2017.
