Ligna 2007: Complex Scanner- and Measuringsystems from Microtec, WoodEye, Limab and Sprecher
06/08/2007 - 18:09
Ligna LaubholzsägewerkeThe high prices for round wood in 2006 and the increasingly high cutting capacities are reflected in the latest developments of the scanner and measurement specialists at the Ligna+ 2007 in May. “The quality scanning increases especially in the saw mills for deciduous trees”, judges Dr. Simon Möhringer. The Italian scanner experts Microtec made the biggest - and at the trade fair mostly discussed – step with the quality scanner “Logeye” for round wood. The full outline of the log (DiShape), curves (DiShape, ScreenLog), curvature and ovality (DiShape, ScreenLog) can be recorded without a gap with the help of multi-sensor systems. Additionally there is the measuring of the density (TomoLog) and the self vibration (ViScan) already at the log yard. “The scanning of round wood is going to be standard in modern saw mills medium term” prognoses Microtec Manager Dr. Federico Giudiceandrea at the Ligna+ 2007 in Hanover.
To put it simply one can make a prognosis about the expected strength of the sawn timber with the help of this new process. The exactly recorded data allow a value maximized cut. The advantage of the saw mill is that one can save further steps in the process with relevant prognosis. The timber with a low density does not necessarily have to be dried for example. A precise photograph of every trunk is being saved and it follows the timber during the entire process of production like an optical fingerprint. “It is important to put the selective measuring technology as soon as possible in the process of the saw mill”, says Giudiveandrea in order to defend the Logeye against the criticism of competitors who go on to sort sawn timber.

WoodEye/Innovative Vision are following the trend towards increasingly faster planers with the WoodEye Sorter. The new software allows the recording of thickness, edges, knots, cracks and resin pockets even with planning machines with 900 m per minute feeding speed. The WoodEye Rip has been a new development to measure the quality in deciduous saw mills and parquet works shown by the Swedes. This scanner is especially useful for the parquet industry because of the growing demand for wide plank flooring. The WoodEye Rip is especially useful for optimising the diagonal cut. “The high prices for round wood rise the demand for scanning systems” describes Rolf Hoffmann, manager of the German WoodEye branch in Siegen (Germany) the situation on the market.

The new measuring process BoardProfiler from Limab is used in the big softwood saw mills as well as in the deciduous saw mills to measure the size and the shape of the boards. Even the vibrations of the boards do not counterfeit the measurement because of the two lasers which are arranged in a row. Up to 250 pieces can be measured per minute. Limab has developed the smaller version PreciCura for the diagonal measuring especially important for the USA-export.

RundholzvermessungDeciduous saw mills or parquet works are the target groups at Sprecher Automation for their new SpreScan Cabo. The diagonal measuring process which is deduced from the round wood measuring the contour of the timber is registered by laser. Edges, knots and cracks are being registered accurately.
