Japan's lumber exports have significantly increased during the last two years. For the first eight months of this year, the exported volume amounted to 84,370 cbms, 62.4% more than the same period last year. The total volume of 2017 is predicted to reach 100,000 cbms.

This represents a very important growth, as the total lumber exports volumes in 2008 and 2009 amounted to 40,000 m3 and 60,000 m3 in 2010 and 2015. In 2016, as the Chinese economy slowed down, the log exports also slowed down, but the lumber export held a steady growth.

China is the leading buyer of lumber, which is used as lamina for laminated lumber and interior finishing, along with sheathing for housing. The average price is 34,000 yen per m3, which is not high, but makes steady business.

Another important move can be noticed in the lumber exports to the US. This year, the export volumes reached 7,338m3, four times higher than last year. The average price is nearly 50,000 yen per m3.

Lumber exports for Taiwan P.o.C and Vietnam was also 30- 40% more than 2016, while the lumber exports to the Philippines has been very large. Log export volumes for the mentioned destinations for the first eight months was 677,582 m3.
