Economy : PAFC GABON becomes a member of the PEFCC
21/12/2004 - 15:12
Unanimous decision by the members of the PEFC Council
In the press release of the 12th October 2004, IFIA informed of the introductory conference of PAFC Gabon which took place on the 1st October in Libreville. PAFC Gabon is the Gabonese support body for the recognition of the ATO/ITTO PCI** by the PEFC. Its administrative structure and its statutes were created and institutionalised on the 15th October 2004.

The PAFC Gabon candidature for membership to the PEFCC was officially presented by its president, Mrs Rose Ondo, at the PEFCC General Assembly on the 29th October in Chile. The definitive candidature of PAFC Gabon was validated by a unanimous vote on the 6th December 2004 by the members of the PEFC Council.

IFIA states that this membership is a big step towards certification in Africa as PAFC Gabon has become the first African member of the PEFCC. This membership is the first completed stage towards achieving the ultimate goal of the international recognition of certified forests in Gabon.

In order to become definitively recognised and to be able to use the PEFC logo, PAFC Gabon must submit a national certification system, once developed, which must undergo the rigorous evaluation procedures of the PEFCC, including a detailed examination of this system by an independent consultant, in addition to an internal and public period of consultation.
